Types of Funeral Services To Choose From

When you are estate planning, you have a lot of choices to make. One of the most difficult choices is what you want to happen to your body after death. Some base this decision on religious preference, while others base it on what their loved ones want. Essentially you have three options.

Cremation

One of the more popular options is cremation services. During this process, remains are exposed to high heat and reduced to ash. The family can take possession of the ash after the process is complete. Families can:

  • Scatter the ashes in a favorite place
  • Keep the ashes in an urn
  • Have the ashes placed in a crypt
  • Have the ashes buried

Cremation is often the most cost-effective burial solution. Normally cremation happens without a viewing or funeral, but this is not always the case. In some cases, the family desires a full funeral or a wake. In this case, a funeral home can be of service.

Traditional Funeral Service

During a traditional funeral service, there is usually a wake or viewing and possibly a religious ceremony. Traditional services often include a graveside as well. Some of the aspects of traditional services are:

  • Floral arrangements
  • Catering
  • Staffing
  • Religious or social officiate
  • Seating and a venue

These are just a few of the services that traditional funeral homes offer. Depending on your chosen services, this option is usually the most expensive.

Burial Only

A burial-only funeral is just what it sounds like. There are no viewing, wake or graveside services. The deceased is placed in a coffin or chosen container and buried almost immediately. This is a popular choice for those who do not have surviving family members or do not wish to place a financial burden on their families. Aside from cremation, it is very cost-effective.

How you choose to be placed to rest is entirely up to you. If you have specific wishes, it is important to put them into a will or other document.
