Downtown is where you’ll find the city’s greatest concentration of historical significance and contemporary conveniences.
If you want to live somewhere with modern amenities but retain the history and character that Macon is known for, downtown Macon is a fantastic choice.
Lofts make up the majority of the housing options in this compact region. If you want to live downtown, renting an apartment or a loft is far more likely than owning a house.
In June 2022, there were seven properties for sale in downtown Macon, with a $425,000 median asking price. Historic mansions, renovated lofts, and apartments for rent in Macon are all available.
Between Mercer University and the center of Macon, to the west of the downtown area, sits College Hill.
While traditional southern homes have taken the place of lofts and apartments in College Hill, it still offers many of the advantages of living downtown, such as being surrounded by history and having easy access to downtown Macon.
With more than 1,000 contributing properties, the College Hill Corridor is a recognized National Register Historic District. In June 2022, there were 12 properties for sale, with asking prices ranging from $16.5K to $2.1M, and the median list price was $338,000.
Ingleside Historic District
Despite being only two miles from downtown, the Ingleside Historic District offers a warm neighborhood feel and a great collection of eateries and retail establishments.
Ingleside village was added to the national register of historic places in 2016 for those still hoping to enjoy some of Macon’s history. Due to its reduced cost of living and historic atmosphere, the Ingleside area of Macon is one of the city’s most sought-after locations. It’s in the heart of downtown and near to all the conveniences.
Payne’s modest, historic neighborhood is situated just north of Macon’s central area. It was formerly a separate town and is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. In 2015, Macon annexed the town. The central Freedom Park is still used as a popular meeting spot.
The farthest place this list will take us from the city of Macon is Jones County, located nearby Macon-Bibb County.
This is the spot for folks who desire to reside close to Macon (30–50 minutes away) yet prefer a more rural setting. The Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge and the Oconee National Forest, which provide several hiking and camping opportunities, are also located in Jones County.
