What are some precautions to take? Wash hands before and after water play; have frequent toilet breaks or diaper changes; do not allow ill children to play in water that other children will play in.

Medicine Chest: Reye’s Syndrome

What is Reye’s Syndrome?
It is a potentially deadly disorder that can impact many different organs.

Why do children get Reye’s Syndrome? It typically follows a viral infection, such as influenza or chicken pox. It is thought to be related to taking aspirin.

What are the symptoms? There are five stages. It starts with vomiting, tiredness, and confusion or nightmares; then unconsciousness; then it progresses to more serious and potentially fatal symptoms as organs are affected.

How is Reye’s Syndrome prevented? Never give aspirin or aspirin-containing medications to children under age 18 years. All children should be immunized against diseases; this reduces the need for fever- and pain-reducing medications.

Health & You: Avoid Becoming a Victim of Crime

When do most violent crimes occur? A little over half of violent crimes occur between 6 a.m.-6 p.m.

What are ways to protect yourself when parking/driving? Keep vehicle doors locked; park in well-lit areas close to building entrance; lock valuables out of sight; have keys and cell phone ready when walking to car; walk to vehicle with a friend if possible.

What are ways to keep my home safer? Keep doors and windows locked; use deadbolt and multiple locks; keep outside lights in working order; avoid tall shrubbery; install peephole in door.

What are safety guidelines when walking? Walk near busy, well-lit streets or neighborhoods; walk with another person; avoid using headphones that reduce hearing; etc.
