What is another name for pertussis? Whooping cough

Is pertussis a problem in the U.S.? The disease is preventable through immunization; however, the number of cases have increased in recent years.

Is pertussis a serious disease for children? Yes, and especially for infants. It can lead to complications, including bacterial pneumonia.

When are children vaccinated against pertussis? Pertussis vaccine is given at 2, 4, 6, and 15-18 months, along with the diphtheria and tetanus vaccines.

Safety First: Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Can you smell carbon monoxide? No, it is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas.

What causes carbon monoxide? It is produced when fuel (gas, wood, oil, etc.) is incompletely burned. Car exhaust and boat exhaust are two sources.

What are symptoms of CO poisoning? Symptoms mimic the flue: headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea and diarrhea, shortness of breath, confusion, and unconsciousness.

How can I prevent CO poisoning? Have appliances professionally installed and maintained; use vented appliances; have heating systems inspected; do not burn charcoal indoors; never operate gasoline-powered engines near the building; etc.

What is “branding?” Branding involves placing logos and names of food and beverage products on clothes, toys, lunch boxes, and other items. It also involves putting cartoon or other characters on food products.

How are food products marketed? Television commercials, internet, videos, etc.

Can young children distinguish fantasy from reality? No. This ability begins to develop during preschool, but adults must help.

Who should be responsible for keeping the staff break area clean? Everyone.

What is one way to clean a microwave oven? Microwave water with lemon juice to boiling; let it sit a few minutes; then wipe the inside of the oven.

How can I keep insects and pest out of the kitchen? Store all foods in containers with tight fitting lids. Wipe tables, clean floors, and empty garbage to prevent leftover foods.

Health & You: Preventing Osteoporosis

What is osteoporosis? A disease that results in low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue.

Who is affected by osteoporosis? It can affect anyone, at any age.

What are the symptoms? There may be no noticeable symptoms; but it can be detected through ab one mineral density test.

What are ways to prevent osteoporosis? Nutritious diet, regular exercise, increased calcium intake, limit caffeine, avoid smoking.
