In Sickness and Health: Mental Health of Toddlers in Childcare

Is it okay for a toddler to use a pacifier? Yes. A pacifier or thumb sucking is a comfort measure for many toddlers.

What are basic limits or rules for toddlers? Two basic rules are: (1) do not hurt yourself, and (2) do not hurt others or property.

How can I deal with a child who throws temper tantrums? First, prevent situations that trigger tantrums. During a tantrum, either leave the child alone (if no safety issues) or hold and comfort the child.

How can I help a child who is afraid of thunderstorms? Try explaining what thunder is. If the child is still afraid, offer him a “magic wand” or other security measure.

Safety First: Bathroom Safety and Sanitation

What is the first rule of safety? Supervision.

What are some diseases spread through the fecal/oral route? Hepatitis, typhoid, giardiasis

At what temperature should hot water be set? 120 degrees F

How should I store cleaning supplies or other items in the bathroom? Items should not be stored in the bathroom. All potentially toxic items should be stored in a locked cabinet or closet.

Nutrition Action: Learning Nutrition on Field Trips

Describe a field trip to show where food comes from. Visit a strawberry field or fruit grove, or visit a farm (grain, dairy, poultry)

Describe a field trip to show food distribution. Visit a grocery store, bakery, produce stand, or a restaurant.

What are themes that correlate with nutrition field trips? Dairy foods (visit dairy farm), set up pretend area as store or restaurant (visit restaurant or grocery).

What are some safety issues to consider? Be aware of food allergies; onsite safety issues; liability.

What are UV rays? These are the sun’s “invisible” burning rays.

What type of sunglasses are best? Any sunglasses labeled “99%-100% UV protection.”

What about safety lenses? Children’s sunglasses with polycarbonate lenses are recommended for safety.

Are UV rays found elsewhere (besides the sun)? UV rays may be emitted by some fluorescent lighting, tanning bed lights, and high-intensity lights. Teach children to avoid looking directly at lights.

How are ingredients listed on the label? Ingredients are listed according to the amount in the package—most to least.

How are nutrition facts listed? By serving size.

What is “% daily value?” The percentage of specific nutrients in each serving, as recommended for adults..

What does “light” mean? “Light” can mean the food has less calories, or less fat, or less sodium, or could refer to the color or texture.
